The Firm

A private firm, owned by its founder, in its sixty-fifth year.

Runciter Associates has three offices and a staff of 340, of whom 212 are inertials. It has no outside shareholders, does not advertise and has never borrowed money, except a desk in 1962.

What the firm does

The firm is a prudence organisation, in the old sense of the term: it protects its clients’ privacy against anyone who would read their affairs, whether by telepathy, by precognition, by a device in the wall or by a member of staff with a good memory and a bad conscience.

It does so in five practices. Prudence assesses who could be reading a client and arranges for them to stop. Inertial placement provides the people who make that possible. Field measurement shows where they are needed and whether they are working. Counter-surveillance deals with the ordinary kind of listening, and half-life privacy with the most private conversations of all. The firm also makes and supports software, chiefly the Intranet Suite.

Ownership

The firm is owned by its founder, Glen Runciter, and governed by its two partners, Mr. Runciter and Mrs. Ella Runciter, with a board of directors drawn from the heads of its practices. Mrs. Runciter has been in half-life since 2008 and remains a partner.

There are no outside shareholders and no plans for any.

What we will not do

  1. We do not employ telepaths or precognitives, and we do not read, forecast or retain the thoughts of anyone, client or otherwise.
  2. We do not name clients without their consent.
  3. We do not act for both sides of any matter, and we do not act against a former client in a matter we worked on.
  4. We do not take matrimonial work.
  5. We do not place an inertial to obstruct the lawful work of a talent licensed by the Turing Registry.
  6. We do not send passwords, or links to reset them, by email.

Licences

The firm is a licensed private investigative agency in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut and Massachusetts. Its field instrument, the PSI-FIELD MONITOR, is licensed by the Turing Registry as TR-01993, one of the earliest privately operated systems on the register, and the firm appears on the Registry’s list of operators. Licence numbers are on the licensing page.

Frothly

The chairman has been a director of Frothly, the San Francisco research institute, since 2009, and its treasurer since 2015. He declared his interest in the firm to its board in 2009, and the declaration remains in force.

The firm installed Frothly’s staff intranet in 2026, at a considerable discount, and its Consumer Device Survey is cited in Frothly’s research. Frothly lists the firm among the institutions it works with.
