If you have been told you are hard to read

Most inertials go through life without knowing what they are. They know only that certain things keep happening around them, or rather keep not happening. Here are some of them.

Signs

  • Fortune tellers decline to read you, or give you your money back.
  • Colleagues who are usually good at guessing what will happen are wrong when you are in the room.
  • People describe you as hard to get to know, even people who know you well.
  • At parties, a certain kind of person moves away from you without quite knowing why.
  • You have never won a raffle, and nobody has ever successfully planned a surprise party for you either.
  • You have worked night shifts, in toll booths, in records departments or anywhere else that nobody looks twice.

None of these proves anything. Two or three together are worth a telephone call.

What happens next

  1. A conversation. With Mr. Ashwood or one of his colleagues, in New York or wherever you are. It lasts about an hour and involves coffee.
  2. A measurement. In Secaucus, with a field meter and a licensed talent who has agreed to help. It does not hurt. The talent may find it tiring.
  3. A result. Your field and its class, in writing. It is yours whether or not you join the firm, and we share it with nobody.
  4. An offer, if your field is Class II or larger and you would like one. Class I fields are suited to particular placements, and to the support desk.

Talents

The firm does not employ telepaths or precognitives, and is not affiliated with any firm that does. If you are a telepath, you already know whether we would hire you.
